Time to Consult an Orthodontist?
How do you know when it’s time to consult an orthodontist? Which one should you choose? Are braces always required? And the big question – how much will all this cost?

Today’s braces have come a long way!
These are the questions that perplex many parents when the topic of orthodontics comes up or they start seeing other children, their own children’s ages, wearing braces.
We can provide you with answers to these and many other dental-related questions when you call PK Dental Centre. We’re here to help and direct you to the proper resources if referrals ever become necessary for your particular condition.
Your Child Might be a Good Candidate for Orthodontics if…
The following dental conditions warrant further examination and evaluation for orthodontic treatment:
Overbite – Occurs when the top front teeth extend too far over the bottom front teeth
Underbite– Occurs when the bottom front teeth extend too far over the top front teeth
Crossbite– Occurs when the upper teeth come down more than just slightly in front of the lower teeth when biting down
Crowding– Occurs when there is not enough space in the mouth to accommodate all the teeth
Gaps/Spaces Between Teeth– Occurs as a result of an accident, injury, lost teeth or extractions which leave open spaces or cause teeth to shift
How Do I Choose the Right Orthodontist?
At PK Dental Centre we’ll make a referral to an orthodontist with whom we have a professional relationship and can coordinate care. But there are certain things you may need to consider as well, such as:
Ask other parents for recommendations – school/PTA parents, work colleagues, sports team parents – many of the people you know have children with braces and most would be only too happy to share their experiences, both good and bad, with you.
Your child’s paediatrician – most paediatric doctors have plenty of relationships with other paediatric specialists – and it’s certainly worth a try!
The one thing you really need to be certain about is that the orthodontist possesses the necessary credentials and is up-to-date with any ongoing certification requirements to continue to practice in that field.
Are Braces Affordable?
The better question here might very well be, “What will happen if I don’t get braces for my child?” Because it’s not always about the expense, right? Sometimes it’s more about the self-esteem that comes from having teeth others admire. Sometimes it’s about the names children call other children with “Buck Teeth.” And sometimes, things left undone turn into bigger and more expensive problems later on down the road.
Many orthodontists have affordable payment plans, making it easier to afford necessary orthodontics that provide your child with the benefits of a healthier mouth, teeth that are more likely to last a long time, and that all important winning smile!
